Friends of Brander Park
invite you, your friends and family, even the family dog is welcome, to join them for a FUN WALK to raise funds for the upkeep of our beautiful park. The route is around the park. Let’s see who can do the most laps in the time period allocated.
Nine laps will get you a free coffee from George’s!
When: Thursday, 24 September 2026 – Heritage Day
Where: Meet at the corner of Foam Road and Dolphin Drive
Time: Register from 8:00 to 8:45 am, Start walking at 9:00 am, Cut off at 11:30 am
What to expect:
A fun morning walking and chatting with family, friends and neighbours
A jumping castle adds to the fun for children on the day. Suitable for ages up to 12, parental supervision advised., Donation: R10.
Boerewors rolls, baked goods and coffee will be for sale.
Heritage Day Raffle: Your chance to win a BRAAI HAMPER to the value of R1,500, a DESIGNER CAKE, and other amazing prizes.

Thirteen New Milkwood Trees Planted in Brander Park
Adopt a Tree Planting Event, 4 August 2026
Brander Park welcomed 13 new milkwood trees as part of the City of Cape Town’s Adopt a Tree Programme. The official planting event took place on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, bringing together City representatives, local residents and members of Friends of Brander Park..
Councillor Francine Higham explained that the programme aims not only to plant more trees across Cape Town, but also to give them the best possible chance of survival. This year, the City received around 360 applications from community organisations requesting approximately 1,300 trees.
Indigenous trees with a chance to last
Friends of Brander Park was delighted to be among the successful applicants. Three of the new trees were planted in late July, followed by another ten in August. The trees were supplied by the Recreation and Parks Department’s Newlands Nursery. Newlands Nursery Manager Jan Botes as well as Chantal Michaels, Director of the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department, also attended the event. Xolelwa Lusithi, Recreation and Parks, served as the event’s master of ceremonies.
Milkwood trees are indigenous to the Cape Peninsula and particularly well suited to coastal conditions. They provide shade and shelter from the wind, offer a habitat for birds and insects, and are able to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are also relatively resilient to pests, including beetle infestations.
More than planting trees
Morton Arries, Table View District Facility Manager for the Recreation and Parks Department, emphasised that the Adopt a Tree Programme is about more than planting trees. By working closely with local communities, the programme helps ensure that newly planted trees are cared for and have a high chance of survival. These partnerships contribute to a greener and more sustainable environment for future generations.
A shared commitment to Brander Park
Representing Friends of Brander Park and the surrounding community, local resident Alan reflected on the important role the park plays in neighbourhood life.
“Why do we need a park?” he asked. The answer can be seen every day: Brander Park provides a place where people can enjoy fresh air, exercise, socialise and build friendships.
Over the past few years, the once-barren open space has become greener, safer and more welcoming, thanks to the combined efforts of the City and the local community. More than 140 sprinklers have been installed to irrigate the park’s approximately 23,000 square metres. Flower beds, benches, a basketball court and a playground have also helped transform the space.
Local residents regularly assist with cleaning, watering and caring for the park. They also generously donate towards the maintenance and improvement of the park, helping to keep it attractive and welcoming for everyone.
Friends of Brander Park would like to thank everyone who took part in the planting event, including the City representatives, residents and the work crew who ensured that the trees were planted with care and expertise.
May our new milkwood trees take firm root, flourish and enrich Brander Park for many years to come.

A perfect morning for a good cause
Fun Walk 2025
The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and a cool breeze carried the mouth-watering aromas of boerewors, coffee and freshly baked treats through the park. Laughter and footsteps filled the air as this year’s Fun Walkers did lap after lap – some chasing the promise of a free coffee, all walking to support Brander Park.
The second Brander Park Fun Walk, held on Heritage Day, Wednesday 24 September 2025, was once again a huge success. While some took to the track, others enjoyed catching up with neighbours and friends. The kids kept the jumping castle busy, the dogs were on their very best behaviour and – thanks to their responsible owners – left nothing behind but smiles. Cupcakes, boerie rolls, and a variety of hot and cold drinks added to the cheerful atmosphere.
The morning ended on a high note with our raffle draw, where the lucky winners walked away with:
- a large bag of dog food, sponsored by Blouberg Vet
- 1 kg of coffee beans from George’s Coffee Bar
- a generous voucher from International Hair Extension
- two underarm laser treatments from LS Therapy
- a carpet-cleaning voucher from West Coast Cleaners
- plus braai wood, fire starters and a lovely sun hat kindly donated by members of the Brander Park community.
The Friends of Brander Park Committee would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all our neighbours, friends, sponsors and supporters for making the morning such a success. Special thanks go to George’s Coffee Bar for once again sponsoring coffee vouchers for those completing nine laps as well as to SRG for their presence, and for contributing sweetie packs and balloons for the kids.
The generosity of the community helps keep our favourite green space well-maintained and welcoming for everyone to enjoy.
We look forward to doing it all again next year – same place, same spirit, same community!

Brander Park Fun Walk, 24 Sept 2024
The first major event organised by the newly formed Friends of Brander Park took place on Heritage Day 2024 and it could not have been more successful! More than 40 neighbours took up our invitation to walk laps around the park, in some cases accompanied by their happy and well-behaved family dogs. Nine laps earned each walker a free coffee. Two bouncy castles kept the children entertained. Spot prizes, goody bags and cupcakes were on sale to keep walkers and visitors in good spirits. The lucky winner Braai Day Hamper was announced and there was an additional draw for a free bag of dog food. In keeping with the nature of the day, we also a had braai going. The delicious boerewors rolls sold out quickly. We were truly overwhelmed by the support of the entire community!
